Hey Apple, You Might Want to Watch This Steve Jobs Video a Few Hundred Times
By: Hillel Fuld (@hilzfuld)
Despite the fact that, as you see below, I think this whole Samsung/Apple fiasco is two multi billion dollar companies acting like a bunch of little children, this video was just too priceless not to share.
I will not blog about Apple/Samsung’s childish behavior. I know, it makes for great entertainment and not much else going on but still…

Here is the thing. Samsung clearly decided at some point to copy Apple. If you look at the evidence brought in the case itself, denying that fact would just be silly. Having said that there is another side. In a normal world, a grid of icons, a pinch, tap, or swipe would not be patentable. Then again, as I wrote, Samsung was warned.
However, Apple suing a company for copying/stealing from them is comical for more reasons than I am going to list here. The two main causes for laughter however, are the fact that Apple did shamelessly rip off Xerox on the idea of a graphical user interface aka GUI for its Macintosh. That was then further ripped off by Microsoft, something Jobs did not view favorably. Again, ironic and laughable.
Well, that is a historic reality but it’s another thing all together when the iconic Steve Jobs says straight out on video that the company was never embarrassed to steal great ideas. Yes, he really said that, see below!
Now to be clear, let’s not take this out of context.
Apple “stole” the idea of a GUI but if you would take the GUI Jobs saw that day in the Xerox lab and compare it to the GUI of the Mac, you would see close to no resemblance.
Apple stole the idea, NOT the execution. If, however, you compare the look of certain Samsung devices to that of the iPhone, they did not copy the idea, they copied the design, they copied the implementation, they copied the actual phone.
I would be willing to bet someone, at some point in the corporate Samsung offices said the following sentence “OK, Apple is kicking our butt here. That iPhone is doing too well. We need to do something. Let’s make a phone (or a hundred of them) that will communicate to consumers that Samsung has an iPhone too, at half the price!”
Either way, it is interesting to see Jobs, out of all people, say that “great artists steal”. Enjoy!
