Galaxy SIII Selling Like Hotcakes, but Can it Withstand a Drop or a Dynamite Explosion?

OK, a little perspective. The Galaxy SII, Samsung’s previous flagship Android device reached the milestone of 10 million units sold after approximately five months. Pretty impressive, right?

Well the new flagship, the fantastic SIII has just reached the same number after only two months. Stop and think about that for a second. 10 million phones after two months. Pretty insane actually.

Of course, Samsung knew they were onto something with this phone and the company actually predicted these figures after the phone went on sale in 296 carriers in 145 countries worldwide.

TheNextWeb points out that the company is selling the SIII at a pace of 190,000 devices per day. Again, insane.

Well, truth be told, the SIII is genuinely a fantastic device with cutting-edge technology and a ridiculously slim form factor, not to mention industry-leading specs.

Having said all that, there is one thing that truly bugs me about the phone, as well as pretty much all Samsung devices. Why did Samsung, a leader in the mobile manufacturing space, choose plastic as the primary material in such a high-end device like the SIII? I mean, plastic?

Now, I get that as far as durability, the glass on the iPhone is no better, possibly worse, but that aside, the plastic gives Samsung phones a more toy-like feel, which is not fun when you paid such a premium price for a phone.

The plastic combined with the relatively huge display on the Galaxy SIII were put to the test by GizmoSlip. Side note: Is it just me or is it kind of funny that there is a channel on YouTube dedicated exclusively to drop tests? No? OK, must be me then.

Enjoy the drop test and the resulting detonation of the SIII using dynamite at the end, if your into that kinda thing… Me? I cringed.
