Cute Demo of the Samsung Galaxy SIII, the First Truly Smart Smartphone?
By: Hillel Fuld (@hilzfuld)
As I finish my installation of iOS 6 Beta 3 (for developers), all I keep thinking is, this phone is no longer cutting edge, it really ins’t.
I mean Apple has been feeling some heat from the Android camp for some time, but with Jelly Bean on the Galaxy Nexus on the software side and the Samsung Galaxy SIII on the hardware side, Apple better do something awesome with the upcoming iPhone. Yes, Apple, that is a threat! (Oh, who am I kidding? Apple isn’t listening, but that is a topic for another time.)
Anyway, we already shared some cool ads for the SIII, you can watch those here. Well, now Samsung released a cool demo video of just how smart this smartphone is, and to be honest, nothing here is revolutionary but all of it is pretty darn cool.
Enjoy. Oh, and Samsung, this is the kind stuff you should be doing. Pushing the envelope, not copying it.
If you cannot watch the video, here are the features Samsung focused on:
- Smart Stay: The phone knows when you are looking at the screen and keeps the display on until you look away.
- S Voice: The creepiest voice assistant you ever heard, but putting the voice aside, S Voice seems to be a lot more useful than Siri for many reasons.
- Smart Alert, Direct Call: The phone notifies you of a missed text message on the home screen and allows you to return a call to the sender by picking the phone up to your face. Cute.
- Social Tag: With social integration, the phone can automatically detect faces in your photos, identify them, then tag them. The tag also includes that person’s latest status update. Awesome.

Smart stay, brilliant!
Can you prevent others from tagging you?
Wonder if these features will be incorporated in the Note II for Verizon.
Didn’t succumb to the SIII, waiting for the Note II – the result is I have a loaner for an upcoming trip abroad. A DROID 2 global, quaint in its small size and heavy as a brick. But I’m told I will get calls and data at sea. For a price, of course.
These are nice features, but hardly cutting edge as well.
