Apple Co-Founder, Steve Wozniak Praises Windows Phone, But There’s One More Thing…
By: Hillel Fuld (@hilzfuld)
Steve Jobs’s partner in crime, Steve Wozniak is one of the most interesting people in tech, not to mention, the most loved. He is just one of those people who everyone seems to like.
You can watch him speak of Jobs’ death below and you will understand why…
In addition to his down-to earth nature, he clearly has a mischievous side, or at least he did at a young age. You can read about his and Jobs’ pranks here.
Then there is the tech geeky side of the Woz, like the fact that he religiously stands on every single Apple line when a new product launches. You can see him standing on line for the new iPad in the video below. Something tells me he could have the product delivered to his house if he wanted to and he does the whole Apple fanboy standing on line thing for the experience.
Anyway, the Woz went on record this week speaking about his love for the Windows Phone operating system. Steve has many different mobile devices and has said in the past how he enjoys Android as well.
In the recent interview, Wozniak said, among other things “I’m kind of shocked. Every screen is much more beautiful than the same apps on Android and iPhone.” To be honest, Steve is not the first person to say this and Microsoft did a pretty fantastic job designing their new mobile operating system.
But Wozniak said one more thing that struck us as the most interesting part of the interview. He said that when using Windows Phone it’s like you’re “with a friend, not a tool.”
Many, including Jobs himself when he introduced the first iPhone, said that great technology knows how to disappear when it is not needed. The same way the keyboard knows when to appear in iOS when needed and fade away when not. It is much easier to have your feature/functionality appear 100% of the time and the challenge is context, or knowing when it belongs and when it doesn’t.
I might be overanalyzing (in fact, I probably am) Wozniak’s words here but I think that is what he means by “Windows Phone is a friend, not a tool”.
After using Windows Phone for a long time, it is clear to me that while iOS is “simplicity-oriented” and Android is “feature-oriented”, Windows Phone is “User or Person-oriented”. It is built and designed for you, the user.
Now, to be clear, having a great UI is an important step in the life of a mobile platform, but it is just that, a first step. Getting an endorsement from the founder of Apple is a huge compliment for Microsoft, but from that to success and sales in the mobile market, there is quite a leap.
In addition, just for a little perspective, Wozniak himself has what is most likely the Lumia 900, a Galaxy Nexus, and two iPhone 4S devices. Any guesses what he uses as his default mobile device? Here is a hint, it starts with an I.
