Wait, What?! Google Wants to Serve You Ads Based on your BackGround Noise and Mobile Photos?

To be a professional tech blogger (is there even such a thing?) in today’s world of technology, you need to understand a lot more than just tech. To understand all the acquisition, market value, and investment mumbo jumbo, you need at least a basic understanding of economics, for example.

Today’s news proved that to be a tech blogger, you also need to understand, at least on a basic level, how patents work…

Today, Nokia filed for a patent that you need to see to believe. A tattoo that notifies you when you have a phone call, SMS, or low battery. Nope, not kidding…

Watch Lamarr Wilson discuss it in his video below. (1:15-2:00 but I would watch the whole video, it’s hilarious!)

Anyway, Google is filing for a pretty wild patent of their own and it involves you getting ads on your phone based on background noise or photos you snap with your phone.

Imagine one day, there you are minding your own business talking to your mom on the phone while watching a football game. All of a sudden, your Android phone picks up what you are watching and which teams are playing then sends you a popup ad telling you about a sale in the nearby sports apparel store. Yes, this could happen if Google is granted this patent. That is scary!

But what is even worse is that the new patent will also analyze the picture you just took with your phone and serve you an ad based on that as well. I am assuming it would use the same technology as Google Goggles, which is pretty unbelievable on its own merit.

You snap a picture of your newborn son, Google analyzes it, and serves you an ad for the nearest baby accessory store… This patent is just a wee bit over the top, if you ask me.

Thanks for pointing us in the direction of this The Onion video, Mark Gurman! After this latest patent, the video below is not far off…
