If you are anywhere near the internet, you must have heard that the biggest event of the mobile year is happening this week. Mobile World Congress in Barcelona kicked off today and Nokia’s press conference just ended.

As I watched the Twitter stream and the Nokia live video feed, one thing became clear fast. Nokia is back with a vengeance. Elop, the CEO, did not deny that Nokia had a hard year, but judging by the amount of innovation Nokia delivered this year, and continues to deliver, the company is back in full swing.

Here are some of the exciting announcements Nokia just made:

  • 13 Million app downloads a day across all Nokia platforms
  • Nokia Lumia 900, the flagship Windows Phone device exclusive to AT&T is now launching globally even in places with no LTE support.
  • The new Nokia Lumia 610, the most affordable Windows Phone device to date.
  • Series 40 sales (feature phones) are up by 250%.
  • New Nokia partnership with Groupon
  • Nokia transport for bus and train information across 500 cities and 46 countries.
  • Nokia Reading, a new Nokia service to stay on top of all your feeds and news sources.
  • The Symbian 808 Pureview device with a whopping 41 megapixel sensor and professional audio recording
  • 65,000 live apps on the Windows Phone Marketplace
  • New version of Skype Beta for Windows Phone

Clearly, the 808 Pureview was the most “wow” announcement and before you attack and as “Why would anyone need 41 megapixels on a phone?” let me just say that the post processing that Nokia demoed on stage was amazing. Imagine the ability to take a photo and then zoom in to view details you would never be able to see on a 5 or 8 megapixel photo.

41 megapixels is a lot, no question, but whether or not you need such a thing, it shows Nokia is innovating around the clock.
