Samsung is the Google of the Hardware World and the Samsung Note is Proof

If you clicked through to read this post, you must be wondering what the heck the title means. What do I mean that Samsung is the Google of the hardware world and what does the Samsung Galaxy Note have to do with anything? Well, I am so happy you asked because that is exactly what I intend on explaining right now. What a coincidence.

Where do I start? How about we start with Google and its general strategy to dominate the w̶e̶b̶ world. Yes, Google started out as a search company, who many believed could never compete with the existing search engines. They were obviously wrong. Entrepreneurs, take note of that and aim for the sky.

Anyway, Google quickly became much more than a search company and today, it is difficult to name an industry that Google has not either jumped into or does not directly influence. That includes but is not limited to mobile, social, location, entertainment, email, and of course, even the automobile industry.

The story goes that Larry Page visited Steve Jobs to get his feedback on Google’s overall strategy and Jobs said that the company lacks focus. Jobs told Page to drop many of Google’s products and focus on its core business. What the story does not tell is that Page apparently left Jobs’ house with an evil laugh saying “Focus? Phh, that’s crazy talk”. Well, at least that is what I would expect him to have said given as how he clearly did not implement Jobs’ advice in any way, shape, or form. The last thing Google is, is focused.

But that might sound to you like a negative thing, it is not. Apple and Google are fundamentally opposed in their outlook on what success is. To oversimplify it, Apple is about quality (yes, i know, Android lovers think their phones are the best, simmer down.) and Google is about quantity (yes, I read Apple’s Q1 2012 numbers and I know they are selling a lot of devices, but Google will always win the numbers game, just as Microsoft did in the PC arena.)

Google does not need to focus, it does not need to charge a premium for its products, and in some extreme cases, it might even pay you use its products! Why? Because Google decided long ago that it wants to be absolutely everywhere. You don’t use the Web? No problem, Google has a mobile product for you. Don’t use a smartphone? Fine, how about email? No? Calendar? No? Do you use a laptop? Try a Chromebook. Not interested? Fine, well then how about Google drives your car for you…  I think you get the point. Google is everywhere and has something that appeals to all audiences.

Meet Samsung. The company that makes more types of phones every day than Apple has released since the company was founded. Samsung is everywhere in the hardware world and they have devices that will appeal to anyone and everyone, even to Tom Cruise lovers.

The Samsung Note is the Google self driving car of the mobile world. You see it or hear about it and all you can say is “wow”. But then you think about it and realize that a car that drives itself can be kind of weird and awkward, as can a 5.3 inch screen on a phone. Yes, it can, but you know what? For you, the Galaxy S2 might be more suitable but for the next guy, who for arguments’ sake, has bigger hands or does not make many phone calls and depends on his cellphone mainly for note taking or surfing the web, the Note is perfect.

It doesn’t really matter if self driving cars will take off, nor does it matter if the Note will become a huge success. What matters is that Google and Samsung are two companies that focus on being everywhere and they are both very much succeeding.

A Little Bit about the Samsung Galaxy Note

The Note, which I have been testing for a week is stunning. You see it, and as I mentioned your initial reaction is “Wow”. Your second reaction is of course “what the…?” Because it is not your normal phone, nor is it your normal tablet. You can read the full review of the Note on The Verge, but I will give you the bottom line. If you use your phone for making a lot of calls, are opposed to using a Bluetooth earpiece, and have relatively small hands and face, then the Note’s good looks might not win you over.

If however, you can get over the 5.3 inch screen by using an ear piece when you need to make calls and like many, use your mobile device for videos, Web, social networking, typing, and taking pictures, the Note will astound you. This thing is a piece of art. The specs are phenomenal too, but again, you can read all that in the review of the Note.

All in all, I am enjoying every minute with the Note, and for me, the only negative thing I can say is that it is not yet running Ice Cream Sandwich, which is unfortunate but will be rectified soon.

The screen quality and vibrant colors are truly a sight to behold. The thinness of this thing combined with its solid build is like almost no other device I have ever used, and if I had to decide on labeling the Note as a phone or a tablet, I would definitely lean towards a tablet that fits beautifully in your pocket and has the ability to make calls. In that sense, it is a pioneer in a new space.

The only other device that met this form factor was the Dell Streak, which was not anywhere near the level of quality I am seeing with the Note.

Here is one more thing the Note has that no other device ever offered. If you ever find yourself in a conversation with a moment of awkward silence, just take out the note and boom, you just jump started the conversation. This thing is a true ice breaker and will become the center of attention in any party, not just a party of geeks. That, I can guarantee.
