8 Israeli Mobile Startups You Might Not Have Heard of But Should Watch Closely in 2012

Over the years, many people in the tech space have called the Israeli startup scene a mini Silicon Valley. Israel has the highest number of entrepreneurs per capita and 2011 was a booming year in this regard.

Of course, there are some Israeli startups in the world of technology that have already reached millions of global users and you have most likely heard of. Companies like Waze, Fring, and others.

Then there are startups that are doing some pretty fantastic and innovative things and have not yet reached the mainstream but are expected to in 2012.

Some of the companies on the list below are actually established and don’t exactly fit under the category of a startup but only recently have they jumped on the mobile bandwagon so we decided to include them:

  1. Onavo: With web consumption on the rise, the amount of mobile data consumed regularly is rising accordingly. Onavo, an iOS and Android app enables you to keep tabs on your mobile data, as well as the main apps that use the majority of that data.
  2. Pops: Mobile messaging is slowly becoming a primary form of communication whether it is SMS, Email, Twitter, or Facebook. The problem is keeping track of all these messages in an engaging and practical way. Pops solves that problem. Watch the video here.
  3. Appsfire:  We have been keeping a close eye on Appsfire and what has become apparent is that no one on that team ever sleeps. With new app discovery products released almost weekly, Appsfire has become a leading name in the world of mobile apps.
  4. Any.DO: Well by now, you might have heard of this wildly popular Android app. With 500k downloads in 30 days, Any.DO is the most popular Android task management app and the iOS app is around the corner. Any.DO made managing tasks sexy, and THAT is not an easy task!
  5. Tawkon: One of the only companies to get a personal rejection letter from Steve Jobs himself, Tawkon has since become a huge success on Android and BlackBerry. Lots has been said about mobile phone radiation, Tawkon tells you how, where, and when it is safe to Talk On.
  6. Babylon: One of the leading names in translation, Babylon has realized the potential of mobile and has developed real-time translation apps across iOS, Android, and Windows Phone. The company also has some amazing things planned for 2012.
  7. Conduit: Like Babylon, Conduit is not your average startup with over 300 employees, but having recently jumped into the mobile world with new development tools, 2012 is going to be an exciting  year for this company. With customers like MLB and many others, if anyone can make waves in the mobile world, Conduit can.
  8. Magisto: You might have heard of Magisto as a Youtube partner, but their upcoming iPhone app is going to make a whole lot of noise. The concept is simple. A user shoots a video (or a few) and with the click of a button, Magisto generates high quality, Hollywood-like effects in a professional fully edited video.

Of course, choosing 8 startups from the hundreds out there in Startup Nation was not a simple task. There are many others not in the mobile space making a whole lot of noise including Soluto, Outbrain, Shaker, Wisestamp, and more. All the companies mentioned here are developing some super innovative products that the market truly needs. You are going to want to keep a close eye on these guys in the next 12 months!
