Google Releases Latest Android Stats… Apple Should Be Scared!

OK, these Android Apple comparisons are getting old, we know! Having said that, Larry Page held the Google Q2 2011 Earnings Call and the numbers are absolutely exploding, we just had to report them.

Android is now running on more than 130 million devices worldwide, which yes we are going to compare, compared to Apple’s 200 million means Google is catching up.

While monetizing apps on Android has been a challenge for developers, the pure download numbers are actually pretty impressive. Google announced it has achieved 6 billion downloads from the Android Market. Apple recently announced the 15 billion downloads milestone, which means Android still has a way to go.

The Google mobile OS now has over 550K activations a day, up from the 500K number Google mobile VP Andy Rubin announced only 16 days ago. The platform is now growing by 4.4% every week.

All in all, Google announced $9.03 billion for the second quarter of 2011, and net income of $2.51 billion. Those are some pretty impressive numbers by any accounts.

As of now, there are over 400 Android devices on the market, which means two things. Number one is that Apple does not stand a chance against Android when it comes to market share (and note: I am NOT talking about revenue here). The second thing it means is that if Google does not deal with the fragmentation issue fast, these 400 devices, soon to be a much higher number, are sure to create a huge headache for Android users and developers.

Putting that aside, it is clear that Android’s growth is moving fast and shows absolutely no signs of slowing down. Of course, the flip side of that coin is that Android developers are finding it much harder to monetize their apps on Android with the pay per download model. In-app advertising, on the other hand, is helping Android developers increase their revenue significantly and this just proves what we have known for years over here at inneractive. Mobile advertising is the future of app monetization.
